My First Square Birthday Cake

Share

This was my first attempt at a square cake. Not too bad. They are definitely more tricky to ice. If you're not careful, you can rip a whole corner off, therefore ruining the whole cake. This was my first monogram fondant letter. I put black sprinkles on it. This is an example of how I'm learning as I go. I did not cover all the sides with the sprinkles so the white sides are showing, which is driving me insane! If I try to do anything with it though, the sprinkles will come loose and get all over the nice white cake. I will do better next time. This was also my first time forming fondant flowers. They are tricky. I'll keep practicing. Luckily, the customer just wanted a yummy cake and did not care how it was decorated. This was a basic yellow cake with buttercream icing.

Firetruck Cake & Cupcake Tower

A lot of hours went in to this one, but oh so cute! The hat and fire hydrant on top were candles. I hope to be able to hand mold little things like these someday. My frustration with this order were the tires on the firetrucks. I wanted to put a white center in each tire, but I could not, for the life of me find a cutter small enough. Very frustrating!

Hannah Montana/Rock Star Cupcake Tower

This is my 3rd Hannah Tower (I think). I love trying new designs. This fondant is gonna be the death of me I believe. I think I know now why mine keep melting (thanks Mattysmom).

The mics were hand molded out of fondant and I used the non-toxic, for decoration only "edible" glitter. I used mold for the large guitar and microphone on the top cake. My first time with the mold really. The molds definitely do not make it the molding process"fool-proof."

My first Bridal Shower Cupcake Tower!!!

I had a blast designing this order. Only my third attempt at covering a cake with fondant. It turned out well. I see imperfections that I will continue to work on, but overall this order went smoothly. The purses and shoes were a hit! The purses were made first by cutting out a bunch of diamond shapes and I made them from there. I made 12 different kinds of purses for each cupcake.

Happy Birthday Gracie! What's not fun about Hannah Montana? My first time making guitars. Practice will make perfect.

Horse Theme Cupcake / Cake Tower

This was for a little girl who LOVES horses. This cake was a big hit. It was fun creating this cake. Originally I thought I woudl completely cover the cake in fondant since the party was an outdoor pool party. But I thought to simply drape the fondant over the cake and make it look like a bandana. It turned out well I think. The horse on top I hand cut out of fondant and used a clay gun with the special tips to make the hair. Same as the rope border around the bottom edge. It was made with the clay gun with the special tip. Then I simply braided the fondant. Looking back now, I would have added more of the bandana fabric piping design on the cake. I was just exhaustedat this point though!

Nascar Cupcake / Cake Tower

Vroom, vroom! Another fun one! Oreo cookie crumbs on top for race track. It ended up looking more like a dirt track instead of a Nascar race track, but I'll keep working on that design. With a 8" cake though, there's not a lot of room.

Candyland Theme Cake / Cupcake Tower

This was a fun order. The Mom did not have a theme in mind for the cake so I had free reign. Since the children were a set of boy/girl twins, I had to stay neutral. I decided on a Candyland theme. The pics are difficult to see the details because unfortunately I was unable to set the tower up myself. There were 3 types of cupcakes. The first was red velvet with cream cheese icing. The other two were blue and pink buttercream icing. All were embellished with edible candies, i.e. Mike ‘n Ike’s and round chocolate, candy-coated candies. There were also some gummies on the cake. The Mom wanted a pic of the two on top of the cake. I laminated a pic and simply inserted it in to the cake. Each cupcake also had a pic of either the little boy or little girl in each. Fun, fun!

Teletubbie Cake / Cupcake Tower

My first Teletubbie order! I sincerely attempted to hand-mold some figurines for this cake, but that was a flop. I will continue to work on that art. I am still trying to figure out how to get my icing more stable. It really just gets very soft (which means it's very yummy) once it hits room temperature. Not sure how to correct that yet. Another thing I would have done differently is the size of the triangles. What was I thinking!! I was thinking of sleeping I think. This was a fun order. I loved the many colors!
